Great Britain 1990-1993 4-Coin Piedfort Silver Proof Set (minor issues)
Piedfort coins are unusually thick -- usually, twice the thickness and weight of a normal coin. Originating in France in the 12th century, piedforts were probably originally produced as guides for engravers, but they soon became prestigious collector's items amongst royals, nobility, and dignitaries. This is the historical beginning of coin collecting as a hobby, and the primary reason for its designation as "the hobby of kings."
This set from the Royal Mint includes four beautiful £1 piedfort coins dated 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993. Each coin features one of the symbols of the United Kingdom: the Welsh leek, the Irish flax plant, the English oak tree, and the Royal Coat of Arms. All four coins come in a beautiful display case with four individual certificates of authenticity.
Please note, this second-hand item shows some light signs of wear and handling, including minor scuffs on the capsules and some dings on the case.
