France 2016 10 Euro Femmes de France Reine Mathilde .900 Silver in Case (minor wear)

Part of the Paris Mint's Femmes de France series, this stunningly detailed 90% silver coin celebrates the life and legacy of Matilda (or Mathilde) of Flanders, wife and queen of William the Conqueror. Theirs was a political union -- William was an illegitimate son, and Matilda's aristocratic blue blood boosted his status -- but apparently a happy one. Matilda bore William no fewer than nine children, and William appears to have been faithful to her. She ruled the Duchy of Normandy while he was at war in England, and was crowned England's first Norman queen in 1068 at Westminster Abbey, where England's monarchs are still crowned today. Matilda died in 1083 and lies at the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen.

This beautifully detailed .900 silver coin features a modern portrait of Matilda on the obverse. The reverse is a scene from the Bayeux Tapestry, which for many years was believed to have been commissioned and/or created by Matilda. Historians now believe that it was not, but in France it is still often referred to as La Tapisserie de la Reine Mathilde ("The Tapestry of Queen Matilda").
