The first Antarctic Treaty was signed in December of 1959. Its intention was to regulate international relations on the continent of Antarctica -- the only continent to not have a native human population -- especially in the context of the Cold War. The Antarctic Treaty and its related agreements designate Antarctica as a scientific preserve and ban military activity.
