Austrian States 1754 Salzburg Sigmund III 20 Kreuzer VF-EF (VF30)

Siegmund III Christoph Graf von Schrattenbach served as Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1753 to 1771, presiding over the final great flourishing of the city's Baroque and Rococo era. Born into a noble Styrian family and educated in Rome, he rose through the ranks of the Church before being elected archbishop after a lengthy and contentious election. Known as a conscientious and devout ruler, he oversaw a period of stability and prosperity while maintaining Salzburg's status as one of the leading ecclesiastical states within the Holy Roman Empire.

Schrattenbach is best remembered for his patronage of music and the arts. During his reign, both Leopold Mozart and the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart served at the Salzburg court, and he supported the Mozart family's early tours across Europe, helping launch Wolfgang's remarkable career. He also sponsored public works, including the construction of the Sigmundstor tunnel through Salzburg's Mönchsberg, which improved access to the city. His death in 1771 marked the end of an era, as Salzburg soon entered a more reform-oriented period under his successor, Hieronymus von Colloredo.
