The closest planet to the sun, Mercury is named for the fleet-footed Roman god of travellers, thieves, commerce, and trickery. As Mercury the god flits between the lands of the gods, mortals, and dead, Mercury the planet zips around the sun at 47 kilometres per hour -- faster than any other planet in the solar system -- giving it a year that's just 88 days long. Because it's so close to the sun, but has no atmosphere to retain heat, its daily temperatures swing wildly from 430 to -180 degrees!
